Week 3
- Canon = comes from a greek word that means "rule" or "standard" .
- The Old Testament & New Testament is the official list of books that were accepted as God's inspired Word. If the book was up to the "standard" it was accepted into the canon and ended up in the bible.
- The OT Canon was put together by Jewish leaders before Jesus was born. Stories of Israel passed down from the time of Moses and the Kings and Prophets were written down and collected and organized into books by Rabbi's 500 yrs before Jesus birth.
- The final list of OT books was set by about 140 B.C.
- The NT Canon was determined by the early leaders of the Christian church.
- Jesus died and rose again about 30 AD
- By 95 AD all the NT writings were finished and were being passed around from church to church
- Wacky writings cropped up later that didn't square with those earlier writings, so the call for a Canon of the NT was called for.
- Requirements for Canonicity:
- 1. Did it come from an apostle?
- 2. Did it agree with what the early apostles taught?
- 3. Was the writing already accepted and used by the whole church?
- If it passed all 3 tests, it was included in the canon.
- By 200 AD 21 of 27 books were included
- by 240 all but 4 were agreed upon
- by 300 only Hebrews and Rev. were still being debated
- by 367 AD a church leader named Athanasius named all 27 books of the NT without disagreement, so, the NT canon was officially set.
- Name 2 of the disreputable books upon which things like the Divinci Code was based: Gospel of Thomas, The Letter of Barnabas
- What did God create? Everything
- Sin is when we reject God and say "we know better"
- Salvation = is the act of saving or rescuing from harm or danger
- God's rescue plan is the plan of salvation
- Redemption = comes from the word redeem which means to buy or pay off to make up for to obtain the release from captivity by paying a ransom
- To pay someones debt is to redeem them
- God wants to save us from what? Sin and what it does to me
- Sin is putting myself first and ignoring God
- Sin causes the breaking of relationship with God and when we die, we are separated from Him and alone. Sin causes death
- We've been captured by our own selfish desires
- There is a path that seems right to man, but in the end it leads to... death
- God has a rescue plan that starts with a family
- Patriarch is the male head or father of a family
- Matriarch is the female head or mother of a family
- Patriarchal history is the story of God working through a series of fathers to save the world
- In about 2000 BC in UR in was a man named Abram
- Abram was the first patriarch
- Abram was told by God to leave his fathers house and go "to the land I will show you"
- Abrams wife was Sarah
- God's 3 Promises to Abram:
- 1 God will make of you a great nation
- 2 All the nations of the earth will be blessed through you
- 3 Your children will be given their own land Canaan (the promised land)
- Abram was given a new name: Abraham which means the father of many
- How old was Abraham when he and Sarah had their first born son, Isaac? 100
- God tested Abraham's faith by asking him to give up what? His son Isaac
- Isaac had a son named Jacob
- Jacob had many sons including Joseph
- Jacob loved Joseph the most
- Joseph's brothers did what to him? sold him
- Joseph ended up in jail where? Egypt
- Joseph became the 2nd most powerful man in all of Egypt
- God loves you and made you to have a life filled with peace, joy and love
- Our sin has captured us and robs us of the life God has planned
- We need rescuing and redeeming
Week 4
- God wants to save us from 3 things:
- The stain of sin
- The power of sin
- The presence of sin
- The second book of the Bible is EXODUS
- The story of the Israelites in Egypt and Moses and the Red Sea
- The word Exodus means going out, departure, leaving, exit
- Jacob and his sons liked Egypt... and they grew in numbers to numbered many thousands after 300 years.
- A new Pharaoh was afraid of the Hebrews and made them slaves
- And he ordered all Hebrew baby boys be drown in the Nile.
- God never forgets what? His promises
- Where did Moses mother hide him? In a reed basket in the Nile river
- What was Moses wife’s name? Zipporah
- God talked to Moses in what mysterious way? Burning bush
- What did God tell Moses to do? Go back to Egypt and tell Pharoah to let his people go

- hail and darkness
- The final plague was the death of Egypt’s first born sons
- God told the Israelites to sacrifice spotless lamb without flaw and to put the blood on the door posts of their homes... the angel of death passed over those homes.
- That’s why Jews they observe the Passover each year.
- The ram instead of Isaac
- The lamb instead of the sons of Israel
- and the future LAMB of God to save us from the power and price of sin. (NT)
- Exodus has 40 chapters
- Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt across the Red Sea to a mountain called Sinai
- God made a covenant with Israel at Sinai... repeating Abrahams covenant but saying that He will be their God and they will be his people
- Bible = Old Promise and New Promise
- Bible = Physical Kingdom (Israel) and Spiritual Kingdom (Church)
- We need the whole bible ... OT & NT
- The rest of Exodus is a bunch of instructions on living in a world of sin... including:
- Run Kingdom
- Take over Promised land
- building Tabernacle (Tent)
- Commandments - 10
- You shall have no other Gods but me

- Numbers is a 40 year time out for not trusting God
- What book is Moses big speech after the 40 years? Deuteronomy

- Moses was how old when he spoke the words of Deuteronomy? 120
- Deuteronomy means 2nd law or repeated law
- Deuteronomy repeats the law given 40 years earlier at Mt. Sinai

- Why are the punishments in the Old Testament so severe?
- God is Holy... set apart from everything.
